On my first day as a fresh-faced young sales recruit at an NBC affiliate, the “living legend” in our department rolled up to my desk and grumbled, “It’s about the relationships, son — you don’t need to know nothin’ else.” While I learned much more from him during my time there, no other truisms made a bigger impact. However, given the changes in how the world markets its fares over the past 20 years, the definition of what those relationships are — and the process of creating them — has changed dramatically. My wily old mentor thought of relationships in the classic manner: belly-to-belly conversations over whiskey and over-sized portions of red meat — at lunch, if at all possible.
